About Fightype

Typing speed test and touch typing course

Fightype is a free typing speed test. You type short stories and see in real time how many words per minute you type and how accurately you hit the keys. Every story is different, so you practice real sentences instead of memorizing one text.

How does the typing test work?

Just click the text and start typing. The clock starts with the first letter and stops after the last one. You can fix mistakes as you go or keep typing. At the end you see your time, your speed in words per minute, your accuracy, the mistakes left in the text and the ones you corrected along the way.

What is a good typing speed?

Most people type around 35 to 40 words per minute. 50 to 70 words per minute is fluent typing, and anything above 80 is a very good result. Accuracy matters more than raw speed: someone who types fast but keeps correcting themselves loses more time than someone who types a little slower without mistakes.

Learn touch typing step by step

The touch typing course has 22 short lessons. Each one introduces only two or three new keys: first the home row, then the top and bottom rows, capital letters, punctuation and numbers. Every few lessons there is a review. Each lesson has a warm-up, an exercise with a different text every time and a test, and the on-screen keyboard shows which finger presses each key. When you finish the whole course with an account, you get a certificate with your result and a number anyone can verify.

Typing duels

Challenge a friend to a live duel: the same text, the same start, and you both see each other's progress while you type. The first person to finish without mistakes wins. Duels between two logged-in players count toward your rating, so you climb from Bronze all the way to Master.

Daily story and rankings

Every day there is a new, longer daily story, the same for everyone. The daily story and the course tests have rankings of the fastest times, and every ranked result is checked so that everyone has a fair chance. You can also send a friend a challenge link and see who types the same text faster.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fightype free?

Yes. The typing test, the stories, the daily story, the duels and the whole touch typing course are free.

Do I need an account?

Not to type stories or play duels. You need an account for the course, because your progress is saved to it, and also for rankings, a duel rating and the course certificate.

How is typing speed calculated?

Speed is shown in words per minute, where one word is five correctly typed characters, including spaces. Accuracy is the percentage of keystrokes without a mistake.

How long does it take to learn touch typing?

With 15 to 20 minutes of practice a day, most people learn the basics in a few weeks. Regular practice and accuracy matter much more than long sessions.

Can I practice on my phone?

The test works on phones too, but touch typing is best learned on a computer with a physical keyboard.
