Typing test

1 minute typing test

One minute is the standard length of a typing speed test. It is long enough to measure your real speed and short enough to repeat a few times and compare your results.

How does the test work?

Click the text and start typing. The clock starts with your first letter and stops after 60 seconds. Only correctly typed characters count, so mistakes lower your score and fixing them costs time. At the end you see your words per minute, characters per minute, accuracy and the keys that gave you the most trouble.

Words or characters per minute?

Typing speed is usually measured in words per minute (WPM), where one word is five characters including spaces. Some job ads use characters per minute instead. The conversion is simple: 40 WPM is about 200 characters per minute, and 60 WPM is about 300.

How to get a reliable result

Sit comfortably, rest your fingers on the home row and take the test two or three times. The first try is often slower while your fingers warm up. Treat the average of a few tries as your result, not a single record. Don't look at the keyboard: even if you are slower at first, you will catch up quickly.

What next?

If you want to type faster, learning to touch type helps the most. Our free course takes you step by step from the home row to whole sentences, and longer stories and the timed mode help you keep your pace through longer texts.

Questions about the 1 minute test

What is a good score on a 1 minute typing test?

Around 40 WPM is average. From 60 WPM up you type fast, and above 80 WPM is the level of people who type for a living.

Does the test count mistakes?

Yes. Only correctly typed characters count toward your speed, and accuracy shows what share of your keystrokes had no mistake.

Can I take the test on my phone?

It works on phones, but scores on a touch keyboard are usually lower. It is best to measure your speed on a computer with a physical keyboard.
