Keyboard test

How to check if your keyboard works

The test shows every signal your keyboard sends to the computer. Just press all the keys one by one: the ones that work turn green, and any that stay grey sent nothing.

How does the keyboard test work?

The page recognizes keys by their position on the keyboard, not by the letter, so the test works with any layout: US, UK, German QWERTZ or French AZERTY. A pressed key lights up on the diagram and stays green once released. Next to it you see the name of the last key, its code and how long it was held. Choose the size of the diagram (full, no numpad or 60%) and the type (ANSI or ISO) above it.

How many keys at once? Rollover and ghosting

Hold several keys at the same time, for example A, S, D, F, J, K and L. The “Most at once” counter shows how many of them the keyboard passed on. Cheaper office keyboards register only two or three keys at once in some spots, while gaming keyboards handle six or all of them (NKRO). If a key doesn't light up while several others are held, that's called ghosting. In games it can mean your character suddenly stops running or jumping.

Double signals (chatter)

A worn or dirty switch can send two signals for a single press. You then get doubled letters in your text even though you pressed the key once. The test marks a key in red when it is pressed again less than 35 milliseconds after being released: no finger can press a key a second time that fast.

Keys the browser can't see

The Fn key works inside the keyboard and sends no signal at all, so no website can test it. The Windows key, Print Screen and some shortcuts such as Alt+Tab are taken by the system before they reach the browser. Turn on full screen: in Chrome and Edge the test then also sees Esc, the Windows key and browser shortcuts. Media keys, if they work, appear below the diagram as keys outside the layout.

What to do if a key doesn't work

First plug the keyboard into another USB port or another computer: if it works there, the drivers or system settings are to blame. Crumbs and dust under a key come out with compressed air, and on a mechanical keyboard replacing a single switch is often enough. If several keys in one row stop working on a laptop, the ribbon cable or the whole keyboard is usually damaged.

Questions about the keyboard test

Is the keyboard test safe?

Yes. The test runs entirely in your browser. The keys you press are never sent or saved anywhere.

Why isn't my key on the diagram?

The diagram shows a typical keyboard in the size you choose. Extra keys, such as media or macro keys, appear below the diagram once you press them. If your keyboard has a tall Enter key, switch the diagram to ISO.

Can I test a laptop keyboard?

Yes. Choose “No numpad” or “60%”, depending on how many keys your laptop has. Keys handled by Fn, such as screen brightness, usually aren't visible to the browser.
